The Printovation organisers have hand-picked a high profile panel of judges for the inaugural Printovation Awards. Featuring Jackie Connor, James Cryer, Russell Montgomery, Marcus Piper and Scott Telfer, read below about this great representation of the creative and printing industries (some judge bios coming shortly).

Scott Telfer

Managing Director, Southern Colour NSW
Scott has been involved in the graphic communication industry his entire working life. He has worked for both printers and printing machine manufacturers. Scott has been General Manager in his two previous appointments and is currently the Managing Director of Southern Colour NSW. Scott has been involved in various industry bodies such as PIAA, LIA and National Print Awards for many years.

Marcus Piper

Joint Creative Director - one8one7
Marcus Piper is an art director and designer with a decade of experience in the design and publishing industry. Best known for his work on the international design and architecture magazine POL Oxygen, Marcus and partner Christey Johansson launched their creative agency - one8one7 - with the intention to create printed matter which engages the user through a 3 dimensional approach to the finished object. This approach has been recognised internationally through numerous design awards, speaking engagements on the future of print and publication in everything from Creative Review to the UK's Independent Newspaper. Prior to launching one8one7, Marcus was senior designer at Neville Brody's Research Studios in London and undertook the independent re-design of Spoon and Crafts magazine's in the UK. one8one7 continue to work internationally with IdN and the Austrian crystal makers Swarovski, as well as at home with clients such as INDESIGN Magazine.

Russell Montgomery

Russell has held Head of Print Production and Studio positions within some of Sydney’s largest and most respected advertising/communication groups, and has recruited, developed and motivated production and studio teams across Mainstream, Direct Marketing, Experiential PR, Activation and Healthcare – with the notable distinction of successfully combining all of these areas within the one team in his most recent role at DDB. Russell's core background is in the print studio area, having progressed from being an artist in his early years, to artist and producer, and then onto becoming a studio manager.

What success he has had in the past ten or so years, Russell puts down to the fact that he 'knows' the studio inside out, and 'knows' production enough, to be able to manage both these areas from experience - to know who to employ and how to manage them and a department. Russell is a member of the GASAA Executive Committee, representing creative services on the board.

James Cryer

JDA Recruitment, Industry Identity
James' involvement in the printing industry goes back to the 1880's when his great-grandfather established a small printery in 1903 which went on to become one of Sydney's well-known printing companies. Walter James Cryer (the first) was an early member of the Master Printers' Association - and now – James Cryer (the fourth) still displays the same passion for the industry - after more than a century of continuous involvement in it.
During his career, James has held various sales, production and management consulting roles, including -

managing director of W J Cryer & Co Ltd - licensees for Avery Labels in Australia,
managing director of Pemara Graphics (NSW) - a leading label and packaging group,
proprietor of Project Packaging - a pioneer in providing print-management services, with a special focus on the self-adhesive label, packaging and POS segments,
founder of JDA Print Recruitment, which focuses exclusively on placements within the printing industry.

Jackie Connor

Print Procurement Expert

Jackie Connor has extensive knowledge of the print industry having been a co-owner of an innovative printing Company that in itself was quite innovative when stochastic screening, waterless printing and 7 colour process were quite new. Jackie also has account and sales management experience, and for 5 years was Procurement Manager for the Production Department at ACP Magazines. She is currently Strategic Category Manager Print for Integral Energy. Jackie has worked with many designers and Advertising Agencies and encourages those that continue to push the print production boundaries.
